"Alright, see you tomorrow." I nodded and headed off to the orange tabby cat in the clearing. She is protecting me from my past. Why though? I love my aunt, Sandfeather, but she is way too protective of me most of the time. I need to be able to do things by myself, I'm not a kit anymore.

I never got to do anything as a kit because of her always hovering over my shoulder. Even just before today, she fussed over me the night before training. Having me go to bed early, being sure I had eaten, I'm getting pretty sick of it. I nuzzled up next to her and she curled her tail around my paws.

"You're getting so big." she sighed.

"And I'm not a kit anymore auntie." I told her.

"That is true. Almost an adult." She reminisced.

"What are you keeping from me? What are you so afraid of? I want to know about them. I can't stand not knowing where I came from." I surprised myself by talking in a totally serious voice. Sandfeather's ears folded back as she frowned.

"To be honest..." She took a deep breath, "I guess I was being selfish. I don't like to talk about my sister, and thinking about your father just makes me..." She admitted, her expression turning sour. I tilted my head, and her expression softened and turned happier.

"But that's besides the point." Her bright eyes dulled again, "I really, really don't like to talk about this..." She's avoiding the point, I can see it. Should I really be forcing her to tell me? Yes! She said it herself, I'm almost an adult. I deserve to know! But it looks like this was painful for her to remember, is this really the right way to do this?

"I was planning on telling you after you became a warrior. I knew you would ask many times before then though." She stalled further, I was beginning to get impatient but I've pushed her enough. "I'll tell you a little bit, but..." She compromised, it's better than knowing nothing though so I nodded.

"Your mother, Shineheart was her name, she and I, well, no one knew for certain if we were related or not but we were abandoned together and I protected her from the start." She took a breath before continuing, "She was-" tears formed in Sandfeather's green eyes, I immediately felt guilty.

"Auntie?" I asked curiously. She shook her head.

"I'm okay." She insisted and continued, "Shineheart was a kind cat. Unfortunately, most of her kithood was spent in the medicine cat's den. There were no other kits at the time so I played with the apprentices most of the time. I would still visit her everyday. Soon we became apprentices ourselves. Ashfoot, your father, became my mentor and the two of them met through me. When we became warriors, the two of them became mates outside of my knowing. I was a little angry at first but ultimately wished them happiness." the tabby's shoulders shook as she held in her emotions.

"Its okay, I don't need to know anymore." I comforted her. She shook her head again before continuing once more.

"Soon, Shineheart was expecting kits. You had two siblings actually, but neither survived. You were the only one. Shineheart told me she knew her own body's limits and that she would be gone soon as well. I didn't believe her, naturally. She asked me to watch out for you in her stead." She glanced at me briefly, "Sure enough, the next morning... She was gone. I ran into the territory after finding out. Ashfoot soon followed. I watched him go, I figured he needed space to clear his head. He always did that when there was something difficult happening. I never saw him again." she sighed, signalling the end of the story. Sandfeather got up and walked out of the camp, attracting a few stares on her way. I sat there, processing what I was told.

There were a lot of difficult concepts auntie used to describe the events, like "gone" what did that mean? Where did my mother go? And my father? Did he just run away from his family? So many questions I wanted answered, but I didn't want to bother auntie anymore about this. That would be mean. I was so absorbed in training, and Auntie today, I was completely oblivious to the passage of time as the sun began sinking under the horizon. I nabbed a small rabbit from the kill pile and took it over to the apprentice's den to eat. I wondered what tomorrow would bring as I quickly finished eating.

I curled up in my nest, auntie had come back a little after sundown. I wonder what she was thinking about. I shut my eyes and peacefully drifted off to sleep, only to wake up in a clearing. A white speckled cat stepped out from behind the trees.

"Hello Duskpaw," She called, "you've gotten so big!" I tilted my head.

"Do I know you?" I asked the she-cat. She softly chuckled.

"Unfortunately, no. But I only have a little time here. I need you to deliver a message for me, can you do that?" I nodded, "To Sandfeather okay? Here it is: your work is finished." She started to disappear.

"Wait! She'll ask who sent the message, can I have your name?" I asked her frantically for a name.

"I of all cats should know her best, she would ask that. Tell her it was from Speckles." And she disappeared, along with the forest around me, and I woke up. The Sun had just risen. I needed to get to auntie immediately, so I hurried out of the den and sure enough, auntie was just coming back from morning patrol. She always took the morning patrol, always a morning cat. But I had more pressing matters.

"Auntie! I had a weird dream last night, there was this cat who came up to me and told me to tell you this," I took a breath as I was talking so fast, "'Your work is done', she said. And her name was Speckles." Sandfeather made a bittersweet smile as tears ran down the side of her face. She ran back out of the camp. I wondered what that meant to her, but I won't question her further than I already have. I had a feeling though, that I would have a good day today!
Awww poor Sandfeather. I felt so bad for her as I was writing this, almost cried myself.

The aftermath of Duskpaw's training with Doeflank, pretty exciting day for him and now we know the complete story from Sandy's point of view.

Anyway, I'm also going camping this weekend, but I'll be working on some other stories I've wanted to get started on in my free time. But the internet at the campsite is minimal so no uploads for this weekend, but of course I'll be working on an American pride picture for the 4th it will be extremely late, but I'll try to maybe get it posted before we leave? I don't know? Life is crazeh.

And what exactly did Sandfeather do when she ran the first time? I am going to be working on it while I'm camping so watch out for that.

Anyway, points time
Written story less than 1000 words= 10 points

Total = 10 points

Not many points here, but it's a major event in both these kitties lives.
